Description

The Owl Nebula (also known as Messier 97, M97 or NGC 3587) is a planetary nebula in the northern constellation Ursa Major. It is estimated to be about 2030 light years from earth. Relatively circular in dimension, with faint details visible inside, it was formed by the stellar wind emanating from the central star, pushing the gases outward. There are three concentric shells/envelopes, with the outermost shell being about 20–30% larger than the inner shell, producing what appears to be an owl's face. Its outer radius is around 0.91 ly and it is expanding with velocities in the range of 27–39 km/s into the surrounding interstellar medium. (Details from Wikipedia)
